The Labors of Modern Man, a Gentleman's Discourse

Men had it easy once. There was a time when a large cave and a box of matches could have made you the most eligible bachelor on earth. I look back and imagine the joys of such a simple life. Today the world has become a far more complicated place, you have only to look out of your office window, or up from your newspaper on the tube and see people's faces as they hurry from place to place. They betray the burdens of their owner, a million thoughts borne out of insecurity, neurosis and the contemplation of trivial things. People worry about a great many things, all of which have been built upon the worries of yesterday. We worry about money today, because yesterday men worried about land, and so sought to make lots of money. We worried about land because we worried about food, so we had to buy land to grow it on. It all goes back to the day when a woman asked just what we are supposed to do when that box of matches runs out. In the end all of our worries exist because of the desire, and fear or failing, to reach one goal. A simple life, with our perfect woman. To have everything we need, and someone to share it with. The same comfort we enjoyed all those eons ago in that cave...+1. Today modern man, or homo sapian lexus, is no longer the ruler of his destiny. His critic and judge is no longer just Mother Nature, it is his women, nature's daughters. We must exude success, yet achieve it without compromising our kindness and compassion. We must be polite and understanding, yet outspoken and uncompromising. We must understand the illogical desires and needs of people not willing to provide simple answers. We cannot win. These worries were handed to us by our forbearers. They wished for a simple life just as much as us, but they too were handed their worries. All because we never took a stand and said NO! We never said enough is enough, and why? Because in spite of the way our lives have been complicated, how battles for money divided rich from poor, and battles for land divided people and nations, we could never say no to a challenge. Women asked questions that we were compelled to answer, and here we are today. The world is full of imbalance, confusion and misunderstanding, and why wouldn't it be, when our struggles as a species were driven by those same qualities. So, I welcome all of the challenges on modern man's qualities. Perhaps we are not gentlemanly enough, perhaps we should be more understanding, perhaps we should be more successful. The cave is bigger now, and there is more in it than just matches, so it is only natural that more is asked of us. It is sometimes said that if women ran the world, there would be no wars, and no hunger. This could be true, what if our roles were reversed...where would we have come to? The answer is simple, because we can answer it before this day is out. Men, go home to your wives and girlfriends, and tell them they should make more money, and go the gym more, and by tomorrow our journeys will have started over, starting with a cold night alone just like our long gone ancestors. -JSG
